It’s the most wonderful time of the year for bargain hunters.
Black Friday is fast approaching, with the once uniquely American sales event now outpacing Boxing Day as the biggest retail sale of the year in Australia.
Taking place annually the Friday after thanksgiving, this year’s Black Friday falls on November 26 and has now morphed into a four-day sales event culminating with Cyber Monday on November 29.
Last year, retail spending in November rose by a staggering 7.1 per cent with a 26.7 per cent increase in buying of clothing, footwear and personal accessories, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) are predicting that Black Friday and Cyber Monday will see Aussie consumers spend a record $5.4 billion.
“What began as an American shopping tradition has been embraced by Australians in a big way,” ARA CEO Paul Zahra said.
“This event is renowned for having the biggest pre-Christmas in-store and online bargains.”
But with November expected to be Australia’s biggest month retail spending for the third year in a row, Mr Zahra warned shoppers to shop early and to take into account supply chain shortages.
“There are several issues that retailers are navigating at the moment – everything from Covid impacts, shipping delays and threats of industrial action from port workers and delivery drivers,” he said.
“There’s a perfect storm of issues so consumers need to get in quick to ensure they get the products they want.”
