NSW Covid cases, vaccination rate

NSW has recorded 196 new cases of Covid-19 during the latest reporting period, as the state’s vaccination rate tops 90 per cent.

NSW has recorded 196 locally transmitted cases of Covid-19 during the latest reporting period, as the state’s vaccination rate tops 90 per cent.

NSW Health says 91 per cent of people over the age of 16 have now received two doses of the vaccine.

There were 224 people in hospital with the virus with 32 people in the intensive care unit. One person also died in the latest reporting period.

It comes as health experts warn Australia’s Covid-19 honeymoon period could soon be over.

Infectious diseases expert Professor Dale Fisher of Singapore’s National University said Singapore’s experience with the virus should be a sobering lesson for Australia.

“I think you will get a bit of a (summer) honeymoon because people open the doors, windows, go outside for picnics. That’s much safer,” he told the ABC.

“My concern, in Australia, would be more about March to April, as you’re going back into winter.”

Singapore has had a large post lockdown surge in cases. The government has now ramped up its booster vaccine program in hope of slowing the spread of cases.
